The Shift Cowl

I'm a big fan of Andrea Mowry patterns {who isn't?} and I'm also more and more a fan of DK weight yarn. When Rose Hill Yarns had a sale on their tonal DK skeins {245 yards/100g} I snatched up three Fall colours. I didn't think that it was enough to knit a shawl, but thanks to Ravelry's search function I came across The Shift Cowl and knew right away it was the perfect pattern. A quick knit that took less than a week of evening knitting, blocking, and sewing the seam.

Pattern: The Shift by Andrea Mowry

Yarn: DK by Rose Hill Yarns

Weight: DK

Yards used ~ 450

Cost of Yarn: CAD$74.55

The yarn is super squishy and soft {100% Superwash Merino} and the mosaic knitting makes it even squishier. I thought this would be a great accessory for the Fall, but I can probably wear it in the winter as well. The colours with the tonal variations are amazing! At first I was a little worried that the two brown tones were too similar for colour work, but I love how subtle yet distinct it turned out.

The pattern includes a link to a mattress stitch tutorial for sewing the two non i-cord edges together. It was easy to follow and worked out great, the cowl came together with a flat, smooth seam. I used a lot less yarn than I thought I would need, the pattern calls for 200 yards of each colour {three colours total}, but I ended up only using about 150 yards of each. Possibly due to the pattern being written for sport weight, and I used DK? The gauge was fine though and the size is true to pattern.

My husband tried it on as well and wants me to knit a blue version for him, but maybe I'll find a different pattern for that project. Any recommendations?

I already have another WIP on my needles, and I'm excited to write about it soon. What are you working on right now? Let me know in the comments, I'd love to check it out!
